Living In The Footsteps Of Those Before Us

People often talk about the legacy THEY want to leave. For me, I don’t even think like that because when I lose a loved one, the focus always turns to carrying on THEIR legacy. I’m sure the Douglas family tonight will reflect on Kirk Douglas’s legacy he created in his 103 God-given years on Earth.

Our Dee Dee , Shirley Brockway , passed away in 2018 at age 100, quite a feat! My grandmother did indeed leave a legacy to model our family’s lives for decades to come. As I see the parenting of my cousins with their kids, it’s very evident the upbringing of my mom and her two sisters by grandmother has been passed down to the 12 grandchildren and the many great grandchildren who live on in her memory.

In the bustle of life, do you ever take time to think about whether or not you are living with the values taught and left to us by those before us? Or do you focus on your impact only? Just writing this, I feel inspired reflect on the impact of those before me EVEN MORE moving forward.

That inspiration intensified after losing my Grandma Mal. My step-father, Vic had an amazing mother, Mal Spinner. She welcomed our family into hers with open arms ! Whether in Brooklyn or New Jersey , it was special being around her. While her health started to decline the last five years, her comforting and sweet voice made you feel like home and she would always be there to answer the phone, and also check in on all of us!

Losing her a couple of weeks ago made me realize how fragile life is and how to cherish times and also think about and learn from those times had with those who lead the way for generations to come.

Both of my grandmothers and my grandfather were surrounded by love at the end of their lives , and that definitely means their impact drew people in! Time to focus on continuing legacies of those before us, instead of buying into the me-me-me my legacy culture.
